930 CV joints Wednesday, 31-Jan-01 13:54:02 207.70.63.165 writes: Hi, who runs 930 CVs? What did you have to do to run them? What length axles? Who's stub axles? Here is my situation. 901 w/ 930 output flanges IRS of course. I may run narrow trailing arms, but not sure yet. I need to figure out where to get stub axles with the 930 flange, where to buy joints (haha), what length of sway a way axles to buy, the spline count (fine or course?) of the 930 axle/joints. Do 930 joints wear out quickly? If I bought a used set could I lube/boot them and run 'em for a while? New units are somewhat costly :( I guess I should dig out the hot VWs article from a few months ago that addressed this issue when relating to offroad cars. Steve Arndt

Steve, email Henry at Intermeccanica: [email protected] - and ask him. He's basically faced with the same lashup for my car (901 to VW IRS. He's done quite a few of these and has a source for axles. (n/t) (george brown) (31-Jan-01 14:05:52) I got my stubs from Weddle for 930 CV joints. If you run stock arms you shold be able to use stock length axles. Kevin just sent my stuff so I can say for sure in 9days. (n/t) (Alex) (31-Jan-01 14:46:18) Are you running T-II inners on the ZF Alex? What is the spline count on 930 vs. T II? Did you buy custom sway-a-way axles for this? (n/t) (Steve Arndt) (31-Jan-01 15:00:24) I am runing the 930 in the inside as well. the axles are from sway a way stock length. I had to change to 930 output flanges. Can not help with the spline count...sorry...have to wait until I get the stuff. (n/t) (Alex) (31-Jan-01 15:39:49) Did you get my reply to your email Alex? (n/t) (Greg Ward) (31-Jan-01 19:42:45) Yes Greg. Thanks so much and I will go synthetic. (n/t) (Alex) (31-Jan-01 21:09:19)

IRS Axle/CV Joint Upgrade Thursday, 01-Feb-01 09:18:03 192.128.166.68 writes: I want to beef up my IRS axles to handle about 120 HP "at the wheel". I'm in the process of building a 2270cc Type IV daily driver street engine. I've heard I can install VW Thing or Porsche 944 stub axles with a '73 IRS tranny and Type II Bus outer CV joints to handle the extra torque of the Type IV motor. I may need to go with the torsional IRS axles from Sway-A-Way, but I can get the Thing or 944 axles from a salvage yard much cheaper. The IRS tranny is a must for better handling characteristics. Food for thought. I've run beefed IRS with stock axles and CV's, street racing only so far. No problems for 5-6 years with a 2332cc type 1. (n/t) (Ron) (01-Feb-01 14:34:37) I've been abusing... wait... ABUSING an IRS for 3 years now. Just don't forget to take out and do burnouts in reverse with a stock motor! Thats the mistake I made when I first got the car... Now it pops out of reverse cuase I busted something! (n/t) (Jimmie J) (01-Feb-01 15:12:31) I have been using the original CV's since the car was new. 250,000+ mi....Last 100K with lots of abuse. I recently re-packed them for the 2nd time ever. Starting to look discolored, but they still work fine. 150+HP and lots of Dragracing.... (n/t) (Ohio Tom) (01-Feb-01 18:10:22) 8yrs on 2nd hand stock IRS axles and CV's with 400 passes down the 1/4, just checked them, threw away worn looking ones and packed tightly....
