Help! Berg sump question... Thursday, 27-Jul-2000 15:48:01 Message: 63.10.133.83 writes: I'm putting my engine together, and am about to get my oil pickup tube extender welded on for my Berg sump, but I lost the instructions that came with it. Anyway, how far from the bottom of the sump should the oil pickup tube be? It's a 1-1/2 quart sump. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide. Ron Bullard

I have a Berg prepared case and the brazed on oil pickup goes off at an angle, rather than straight down. Is this normal? (n/t) (Randy) (27-Jul-2000 16:25:52)
It should extend straight down towards the drain plate. Check to see that you pick-up tube isn't loose in the case or the securing nut isn't missing. (n/t) (Chas) (27-Jul-2000 20:04:53)

The end is also cut at an angle. It's a good idea to not use the screen and get the cow magnet for the pickup. I have to assume that you have it modified for full flow. If not now is the time to do it, before you put everything together. DB Don Bulitta

I Loc-tite'd my studs in place, installed the sump and torqued the bolts correctly. I have been fighting an oil leak not realizing that the studs had bottomed out in the nuts preventing the sump from sealing properly. When I finally figured out where the leak was coming from, I went to tighten it down further and broke off a stud in my case. I have since installed shorter studs with no problems. Just something to be aware of =) Dave Conklin

Oil pick-up tube Friday, 28-Jul-2000 03:17:09 Message: 195.102.197.27 writes: There was a posting a day or so ago about oil pick-up tubes. How many of you have noticed that most of the new crankcases these days have a short oil pick-up which has been brazed in at an angle to the deflector plate? This makes it impossible to use the extension supplied with deep sumps. A simple solution is to cut a section from a factory breather pipe (the one next to the oil filler), incorporating a small section of the curved tube. Make the extension out of this, using the curve to straighten out the pick-up. It works well and outs the pick-up tube bang in the centre of the sump plate. It worked for me... Keith Seume

Re: Keith, I ran into that on my 2Liter several years ago and did the same thing, it worked well. Those cases are nice when they are blue printed, they check out "ON THE MARK", Some of the new cases coming form "VW" have had some machine tolerance problems (n/t) (Art Thraen) (28-Jul-2000 12:08:00)

I`ll have to comb the swapmeets for them. Sounds like a cheap or giveaway piece. I`ll never have to by those stupid sump tube packs that only come with one usable tube again. Mark H
