are you just pulling the bearings off or the whole tube, axle etc.. (n/t) (12-Jul-2000 21:20:41) if you bang the axle inward with a RUBBER mallet or block of wood they will usually walk out of the tube easily. they are a loose fit in the tube, a little tighter on the axle. dennis/valley vw (n/t) (12-Jul-2000 21:59:20) You should invest in a puller (Nick Gomez) (12-Jul-2000 22:51:21) the trans is out of the car, I was just going to change the bearings but if I have to take off the tube and axle thats cool, but shouldn't I try banging the tube outward with a mallet not inward? (n/t) (Eric) (12-Jul-2000 22:52:37) if the tranny is out , remove the 6 13mm nuts and bang the tube off with the mallet. you will need new gaskets and sealer for reassembly, use the same amount of gaskets under the flanges -they set the tube'end play' tubes should fall under their own weight with some drag when bolts are tight . read bently manual for details, ps. ive never seen a puller that can handle this job exept in books. dennis valley vw (n/t) (12-Jul-2000 23:20:57)

You should invest in a puller Wednesday, 12-Jul-2000 22:51:21 161.142.78.82 writes: You don't need to buy a brand new puller. Nice German, US or Japanese pullers can be found at swapmeets, flea markets, etc. if youre dilligent enough. As for the hooks you can take 2 long bolts and grind the head until you have a 'T' shape on each one. Then you can use these with the puller to pull out the wheel bearings. More info on this in the Haynes manual but the picture in there shows a hook type tool made out of a long bolt. My brother and I did this a few years back so I don't really remember the details. I remember watching him grind the bolt heads into a 'T' shape though. Nick Gomez
