Aaron,
I use MSD Pro Billet Dist PN 8485 in my sedan( Along with other MSD products). I adjusted my mechanical advance the hard way.
I initially set the dist up with MSD's Advance locked out. I locked out the timing all together to find the best timing setting at idle speed. For
my particular engine it's 11 Degrees at idle.
I all ready knew that my engine ran best with a total advance of 36 degrees so I subtracted 11 from 36 and got 25 degrees. This happens to be
the setting if the Silver advance stop bushing ( Lucky me!) not all engines will be this easy.
With that out of the way, I went ahead and installed the Advance weight springs. I started with one heavy Silver & one Light Silver ( in the
middle of MSD's chart). Then I drove the car hard and timed the run. Now with a time i chanced to the next lighter spring in MSD's list (
Faster advance) and then did anither run. I did this 7 times before I was sasistified that i was in the running.
I wound up using one Blue spring & one light silver spring for my advance weights.
Yours will be along the same lines as mine in the setup dept ( Unless you have access to a DYNO).
Just keep in mind most VW's don't like more than 15 Degrees of inital Timing @ idle speeds( More than that causes hard starting) & the total
advance is usually around 32-38 Degrees Total in at 3000-3500 RPM. Any more than that & you'll burn up the engine!
If you're running Boost & or Nitrous you have a whole different set of rules to go by. These type of engines use Way less total timing (28
Degrees & less are common here).
Cheers,
Dave.
