P>Asked this before and got lots of theory. Need real experience. I want a hotter coil with my pertronix, but I don't want the balast resistor with it. Can this be done safely? Brian

The pertronix only changes how the spark is triggerred, but doesn't change the spark quality AT ALL over a properly working points/condensor system (n/t) (John Connolly) (13-Apr-2000 06:57:58) I have run my Pertronix with my MSD 6al & blaster coil for 3 years no problems yet? (13-Apr-2000 11:26:48) I ran the Pertronix ignition for 5 years with a Allison 60,000 volt coil with ZERO problems....... (Andy Costello) (13-Apr-2000 12:19:22) YES. It's a CDI with dual inputs (for magnetic and points input). The "L" in 6aL stands for "limiter" (built in rev-limiter). Frankly, the MSD does NOTHING more than a regular CDI but is packaged in a pretty red box. The multiple sparks are a function of all CDI units as a result of their operation. It's a marketing gimmick. (n/t) (John Connolly) (13-Apr-2000 17:36:04)

Hi, Brian Vader.

This is my real experience. I've been using pertronix, red bosch coil and stock plug (W8AC)in my daily driven 1641 for about 3 years, that's about 30000 miles. No resistor, no problem! Just use quality spark wires. Regards.

What more that I can tell you is that the performance gain isn't that great, though more reliable.

Pertronix recommends you do NOT use it with this coil; that's reason enough for me. There is NO gain compared to a PROPERLY operating points/condensor system. A CDI is a different ballgame. These do address spark quality. John Connolly

Brian,

I learned the hard way, Pertronics ignitors are very picky when it comes to coils (something to do with the resistance,as per the people @ Pertronics). The wrong coil burns them out rather quickly and unceremoniously.

May I suggest using a Bosch blue coil or a Pertronics coil, along with a MSD 6AL box to enhance the spark.

I want to run more plug gap than the blue coil can give, but I have little money. I have the pertronix already, and a blue coil. Any ideas? .24 is just too narrow!

I've heard of the 6AL box numerous times and know a lot of people use it....stupid question maybe....but is the 6AL box a CDI in of itself?
