Quarter mile shut-down Wednesday, 24-Jan-01 18:12:03 24.88.85.189 writes: What is the proper method for shut down at the end of the quarter, say you are one of the 100+ mph club guys. Do you pop the tranny into neutral, leave it in gear or does it matter? In the DKP video the driver puts the car into neutral and coasts in the shut down area. Are there engine wear, cooling, shifts in suspension geometry or other considerations that would affect what you do? Victor H.

If your not running a fan I would shut down right away. But if you do have your fan let the car slow itself down and it will help cool the motor. If the motor is just running off the idle circuit and your still turning high rpms at a coast it will stabilize temps quickly. (n/t) (24-Jan-01 18:24:31) First I let off the gas and let the car slow itself down. Then I hit the brakes a little, if everything sounds OK with the motor I will put it in nueltral and let it coast to the end. (n/t) (Kurt Mezger) (24-Jan-01 18:56:38) Sorry, wasn't done. When your racing it puts a beating on the motor creating heat. I usually give the car time to cool down before coming back in the return lane. Usually only 2 or 3 minutes before going back to the pit area. Different drivers have different methods though. Some never shut their cars off unless there is a problem. (n/t) (Kurt Mezger) (24-Jan-01 19:01:15) I lift as soon as I go through the lights then I turn the key off and coast in gear. Sometimes I open the throttle up so it sucks in cool air but isn't firing because the key is off. (n/t) (chuck) (24-Jan-01 19:42:12) smart!!! (n/t) (24-Jan-01 19:43:36) and sucks in gas also, looks like the raw fuel would wash down the cylinders, or are you FI.? (n/t) ( James2) (24-Jan-01 19:49:00) Yea man F.I. all the way. Carbs blow (n/t) (chuck) (24-Jan-01 23:11:55) i'm beginning to think that too (n/t) (john f) (25-Jan-01 02:01:17) First I would push the clutch in just past the finish line keeping the engine running to cool the turbo down, then start slowing the car down,NEVER!! take your foot off the gas to slow the car down after the finish line, the car will unload and make the rearend try and come around. (n/t) (Dominick Luppino) (24-Jan-01 19:45:04) So what you're saying is keep your foot in the carb to help cool the turbo and the clutch will slow you down? So you're engines at what 8 G's coming around the return? When DO YoU let off the gas if not to slow down. I would love to know who built your motor. How many feet do you have? Most guys I know have 2 and most cars have 3 pedals. DUde you are amazingggggggg! (n/t) (24-Jan-01 22:33:42) First, Mr No Name, my foot isn't in the carb, it's on the Gas Pedal with the motor at idle,as far as who builds my engine I do always have always will DIP!! (n/t) (Dominick Luppino) (24-Jan-01 23:08:41) that's why dominic lupino slayed dragons- he's bad ass (n/t) (john f) (25-Jan-01 02:03:00) Have you ever heard of heal-and-toe? It's a technique that has been used since cars were invented to use all three pedals with two feet. It's the only way to brake and downshift a non synchro trans at the same time. (n/t) (Ed) (25-Jan-01 07:34:56) I don't think it is a good idea to let off the throttle over 5,000rpm. I push in the clutch and slow the car down to about 70 or so and then let it back out and down shift never more than 4,000rpm to cool it down. By the time I'm back in the pits it is ready for another go..... (n/t) (Ohio Tom) (24-Jan-01 21:55:27) I simply throw the thing in neutral and turn the baby off and hit the brakes all at about 126mph. Car goes perfectly straight, never out of control, don't know what it would be like at 140 + like Kurt and Dominick. Never use the engine turned off in gear, without the clutch depressed, to slow the car. Lots of fools do this on the east coast, maybe they do it on the west coast as well, can you say BAD FOR THE MOTOR!!!!!! (n/t) (Ollie Frey) (24-Jan-01 22:46:12) Re: Quarter mile shut-down (Jack Sacchette) (24-Jan-01 23:01:47) Well said, BIG DADDY!! (n/t) (Dominick Luppino) (24-Jan-01 23:12:27) I like to stay on the gas past the finish line for a little extra speed, then I push in the clutch and let off the gas leaving the motor running, coast for a few seconds then apply the brakes. (n/t) (Dave Perkins) (24-Jan-01 23:25:06) Well there you have it..excellent advice from a pro turbo -pro stock-and super street ,champions all....thats what the forum is about... (n/t) (Art Gumpfer) (25-Jan-01 01:03:44) Re: Quarter mile shut-down (Muffler Mike) (25-Jan-01 10:00:43) I agree with Mike. Also it puts a big stress on the rod bolts as the load shifts form the top half to the bottom half (n/t) (Mike Lawless) (25-Jan-01 11:29:34) Re: Push the clutch in, pull the chute lever, pull the fuel shutoff, ease into the brakes, AND ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR THE GUY IN THE OTHER LANE! He may NOT know how to stop his! (n/t) (Sparky McTig) (25-Jan-01 14:53:45) cool name Sparks! (n/t) (John Connolly) (25-Jan-01 19:15:28)

As you go threw the lights push in the clutch and let off the gas.ASAP then shut off the motor to get a plug reading. NEVER use the motor to slow down the car ,that is what brakes are for.Take it from me ,use the motor to slow your car down and you will be watching races from the grand stands.
